Life has been thrown upside down of late with all weddings during April and May of 2020 being postponed.

Major Wedding Survey

A major wedding survey* which has looked at the initial impact of Covid 19 on the wedding industry confirms the huge scale of disruption to couples who had planned to get married in 2020.0

They survey had responses from a whopping 1,586 couples who were due to get married in 2020. The independent research company Wedding Connexions concluded that 43% of planned weddings for 2020 have already been re-scheduled due to the pandemic.

This figure rises to 94% of weddings that were due to take place April-June.

Quarter of a Million UK weddings a year

Annually there are approx a quarter of a million weddings in the UK. What this mans is that 60% of all UK couples getting married are now uncertain if their original wedding date will go ahead this year. Although it was heartwarming that two-thirds of those with autumn/winter weddings still expect their wedding will take place.

Interestingly the same survey identified that wedding insurance take up was much higher than average before the Government’s suspension of weddings. Nearly half of all couples taking up wedding insurance.

Unfortunately, it now appears that most of these policies will only cover cancellation when a key member of the wedding party has Covid-19. The situation is further compounded by wedding venues finding they can only claim on business interruption policies when the venue itself (staff) has succumbed to an outbreak and are therefore reluctant to cancel. Its an utter nightmare for the entire industry and all our couples due to get married.

A Flexible and Friendly Industry

The disruption to the industry and to the thousands of independent businesses has been catestrophic. However we’re a friendly industry and the the large majority of wedding suppliers and venues are proving to be flexible in the face of adversity.

Communication is Key

One of the main features of the survey was the positive view the large majority of couples have on the way their wedding suppliers and venues have communicated with them.

Here at NKP we’ve been reaching out to our clients; moving dates, calming and reassuring clients, and learning as we go along how to manage the situation we find ourselves in. And we love that our Clients have called and emailed us too. Checking in on us and keeping us sane!

Its a strange, surreal, stressful time for everyone involved in the industry. Professionals and Clients alike. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the main summer wedding season will still happen albeit a number of changes and adaptations having to be made. Watch this space…
