Your photographs are a treasure trove of memories and yet for the majority of us (yes me included!) the most important of those memories often stay hidden away and forgotten about in the memory sticks (or old school CDs/DVDs) they were supplied on.
At the beginning of the month and the last Bank Holiday weekend celebrating VE Day, I took the time to reflect on life and what was important. For me that is family, friends, and precious memories.

We all saw those wonderful photographs from the VE Day celebrations back in 1945, but where would we be now if they hadn’t been printed. Yes I hear you say “that was 1945, nothing was digital!”. I totally get that and yet Photography was expensive back then and yet they still printed their photographs.
So let’s fast forward to 2095. That’s 75 years from now. Or even just 50 years, or 10 years. Technology moves on at an incredible rate. Your daughter, grandson, great-niece, Godson asks to see some photographs of you on your wedding day, or the day you got engaged. They also want to see your parents, your friends, people whose names they’ve heard but have never seen. “Of course!” you reply; “They’re stored on that old USB/iPhone/laptop under the spare bed.”
And so you finally find said USB/iPhone/laptop exactly where you said it was. But there’s no charger. It won’t power up. The USB has corrupted over time. The old iPhone has been thrown away in error (it didn’t work after all and it wasn’t backed up so you’d lost everything on there anyway!). There’s no way of accessing the images.

It’s a worrying thought but something we need to consider given that no one really knows how long digital images last.
One thing that struck me seeing all the incredible VE Day photographs was that people don’t throw away photographs. There’s something about a physical photograph. It’s so much more than just some nice photographic paper. It holds memories. It tells a story. In the faces it shows it holds your past and those of future generations to come.
